One of the most common questions new vapers ask is: which nicotine strength should I pick? The answer depends on your smoking history and what device you are using. Here is a straightforward guide based on what we see in our Coral Gables store every day.
Salt nicotine vs freebase — the big difference
Before you pick a number, know which kind of nicotine you are buying.
- Salt nicotine (nic salt) — used in disposables and low-power pod systems. Smoother on the throat at high strengths. Absorbed faster by the body. Typical strengths: 20mg to 50mg.
- Freebase nicotine — used in sub-ohm tanks and box mods. Harsher throat hit but better flavor production. Typical strengths: 3mg to 12mg.
If you are using a disposable or pod system like a Lost Mary or Elf Bar, you are using salt nicotine. If you are using a sub-ohm tank kit, you are using freebase.
If you currently smoke cigarettes
Start with salt nicotine at a level that matches your cigarette habit:
- Light (3-5 cigarettes a day): 20mg (2%) salt nic
- Moderate (half a pack a day): 35mg (3.5%) salt nic
- Heavy (pack a day or more): 50mg (5%) salt nic
Most US disposables ship at 50mg because that is what heavy former smokers need. If you feel jittery, lightheaded or nauseous, the strength is too high — switch down.
If you are a casual vaper or social user
Start at 20-25mg salt nic in a pod system, or 3-6mg freebase in a larger kit. You do not need 50mg if you never smoked cigarettes.
If you want zero nicotine
0mg options exist in both salt and freebase. Good for flavor chasers or people who want to quit nicotine entirely. See our nicotine-free vapes collection.
